傳教士故事:一組浪子回頭教學水彩掛圖

《聖經》路加福音中的浪子回頭故事是耶穌說的一個著名比喻。我們先來看看這個比喻。

浪子的比喻
11耶穌又說:「一個人有兩個兒子。12 小兒子對父親說:『父親,請你把我應得的家業分給我。』他父親就把產業分給他們。13 過了不多幾日,小兒子就把他一切所有的都收拾起來,往遠方去了。在那裡任意放蕩,浪費資財。14 既耗盡了一切所有的,又遇著那地方大遭飢荒,就窮苦起來。15 於是去投靠那地方的一個人;那人打發他到田裡去放豬。16 他恨不得拿豬所吃的豆莢充飢,也沒有人給他。17 他醒悟過來,就說:『我父親有多少的僱工,口糧有餘,我倒在這裡餓死嗎?18 我要起來,到我父親那裡去,向他說:父親!我得罪了天,又得罪了你;19 從今以後,我不配稱為你的兒子,把我當作一個僱工吧!』20 於是起來,往他父親那裡去。相離還遠,他父親看見,就動了慈心,跑去抱著他的頸項,連連與他親嘴。21 兒子說:『父親!我得罪了天,又得罪了你;從今以後,我不配稱為你的兒子。』22 父親卻吩咐僕人說:『把那上好的袍子快拿出來給他穿;把戒指戴在他指頭上;把鞋穿在他腳上;23 把那肥牛犢牽來宰了,我們可以吃喝快樂;24 因為我這個兒子是死而復活,失而又得的。』他們就快樂起來。25 那時,大兒子正在田裡。他回來,離家不遠,聽見作樂跳舞的聲音,26 便叫過一個僕人來,問是什麼事。27 僕人說:『你兄弟來了;你父親因為得他無災無病地回來,把肥牛犢宰了。』28 大兒子卻生氣,不肯進去;他父親就出來勸他。29 他對父親說:『我服事你這多年,從來沒有違背過你的命,你並沒有給我一隻山羊羔,叫我和朋友一同快樂。30 但你這個兒子和娼妓吞盡了你的產業,他一來了,你倒為他宰了肥牛犢。』31 父親對他說:『兒啊!你常和我同在,我一切所有的都是你的;32 只是你這個兄弟是死而復活、失而又得的,所以我們理當歡喜快樂。』」 (聖經:路加福音15章11-32節)

最近安省Barrie市的一位古董商人出售了一副古董掛畫。掛畫是手工繪在絲綢布上,一組共六幅被用一根一劈兩半的水竹夾住製作成掛畫。畫約24英寸長,17.5英寸寬。熟悉聖經的人一看便明白這六幅畫是講的聖經中的浪子回頭故事。我們來看看這六幅畫。


第一幅:辭行去遠方。 “小兒子對父親說:『父親,請你把我應得的家業分給我。』他父親就把產業分給他們。過了不多幾日,小兒子就把他一切所有的都收拾起來,往遠方去了。” ( “The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them. Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country”)(路加福音Luke 15:12-13)。Ref.#: 20220524.


第二幅:放蕩生活。 “在那裡任意放蕩,浪費資財。” ( “and there squandered his wealth in wild living. )(路加福音Luke 15:13)。


第三幅:窮困潦倒。 “既耗盡了一切所有的,又遇著那地方大遭飢荒,就窮苦起來。於是去投靠那地方的一個人;那人打發他到田裡去放豬。他恨不得拿豬所吃的豆莢充飢,也沒有人給他”。 (“After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.”)(路加福音Luke 15:14-16)。


第四幅:回到父那裡。 “『我要起來,到我父親那裡去,向他說:父親!我得罪了天,又得罪了你;從今以後,我不配稱為你的兒子,把我當作一個僱工吧!』於是起來,往他父親那裡去。相離還遠,他父親看見,就動了慈心,跑去抱著他的頸項,連連與他親嘴。兒子說:『父親!我得罪了天,又得罪了你;從今以後,我不配稱為你的兒子。』” ( “I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants.’ So he got up and went to his father. “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’” )(路加福音Luke 15:18-21)。


第五幅:高興慶祝。 “父親卻吩咐僕人說:『把那上好的袍子快拿出來給他穿;把戒指戴在他指頭上;把鞋穿在他腳上;把那肥牛犢牽來宰了,我們可以吃喝快樂;因為我這個兒子是死而復活,失而又得的。』他們就快樂起來。” ( ““But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.”)(路加福音Luke 15:22-24)。


第六幅:勸說長子。 “大兒子卻生氣,不肯進去;他父親就出來勸他。他對父親說:『我服事你這多年,從來沒有違背過你的命,你並沒有給我一隻山羊羔,叫我和朋友一同快樂。但你這個兒子和娼妓吞盡了你的產業,他一來了,你倒為他宰了肥牛犢。』父親對他說:『兒啊!你常和我同在,我一切所有的都是你的;只是你這個兄弟是死而復活、失而又得的,所以我們理當歡喜快樂。』” ( “ “The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’ “‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”)(路加福音Luke 15:28-32)。

從畫是中國水彩畫和畫中人物的衣著與留有辮子判斷,畫是繪於晚清的中國。當時手繪的用於講解聖經故事的教學掛圖一般都沒有畫家署名,也沒有與聖經無關的其他文字,這些畫上沒有任何文字,因此精心繪製和製作這幅掛畫的目的很可能是為了教學,而不是送禮。

當時一些在繪畫上有恩賜的在中國的傳教士也會用中國水彩繪製一些講解聖經故事的掛圖。分辨畫者是傳教士還是中國人,一個有效的辦法是看畫中門框上的對聯,傳教士因為不會書寫中文,對聯上的字常常是沒有意義的亂碼。這組畫中的第四幅門框上的對聯小字“失足不知世間愚,尚肯回頭天路近”不僅清楚而且書法也很漂亮,因此判斷畫家應該是中國人。而且應該是一位對聖經有相當了解的基督徒。一是要準確把握每幅畫中父親、大兒子、小兒子的表情,需要對聖經有相當的了解。二是如後面我們還會討論的,第四幅畫中父親的頭遮擋了上述對聯中的“愚”字,畫家特別在父親的頭像旁寫下了“愚”字,以免我們誤猜為與聖經教導不符的“遠”字。

這組掛圖當時用於課堂講解聖經故事的使用者是誰呢?古董銷售商是一位賣亞洲藝術品、瓷器、銀器、遺產拍賣的商人,他的物品來自美加各地,傳教士物品只是偶爾出現,他提供不了有意義的線索。我們只能從以下幾點判斷。一是清晚期時中國人牧師還很少,移民美加的就更少,此畫很可能是一位傳教士在中國使用,然後由他/她回國時帶回來的。我收集的1950年以前中國的與基督教相關的物品,能確切知道來源的,基本上都與過去在中國的傳教士有關。二是畫是畫在絲綢布上,但布是經過了一些特別方法的處理,有點像油畫布那樣發硬,很像是經過中西方法結合處理製作出來的畫布。但這方面我知識有限。

最後我想比較一下中國的浪子回頭金不換典故與聖經中浪子比喻的異同,這會給我們十分有益的啟迪。我們來看看中國的浪子回頭典故。

中國的浪子回頭典故

《衣錦還鄉做賢人》全詩:
當年路旁一凍丐,今日竟敢戲臘梅;一孔橋邊無表兄,花盡銀錢不用回。
三年表兄未找成,恩人堂前還白銀;浪子回頭金不換,衣錦還鄉做賢人。

話說明朝時,有一個財主已經年過半百,才喜得貴子。家人激動萬分,給新生兒取名為天寶。全家對天寶有求必應,寵愛得無以複加。天寶長大後遊手好閑,揮金如土。成人後不久父母又雙雙離世,沒人約束的他更是無法無天的放縱,狐朋狗友一起花天酒地,奢侈無度。不到兩年,萬貫家財被他揮霍個精光,落得靠乞討為生,受盡熱嘲冷諷,吃了上頓沒有下頓。他開始後悔自己過去的生活太荒唐,決定痛改前非。一天晚上,他借書回來,因地凍路滑,再加上一天粒米未進,一跤跌倒後沒有力氣爬起來。所幸同一處的王員外正好路過,便命家人救醒天寶。天寶醒後,王員外同情他,便把他留在身邊,讓他做女兒臘梅的老師,教臘梅讀書識字。王員外的女兒臘梅長得如花似玉,而且溫柔賢淑。時間一長,天寶愈益愛慕臘梅,竟然對臘梅動手動腳。臘梅找父親告狀,王員外聽後非常氣憤,沒想到一時心軟,竟引狼入室。但他怕這件事傳到外麵,會損害女兒的名聲,隻能壓下心頭怒火。但立馬寫了一封信,把天寶叫來,命他去蘇州一孔橋邊找一個親戚。又給天寶二十兩銀子作為路費。天寶知道自己惹怒了老爺子,隻好乖乖地上路。誰知到蘇州後,發現到處都是孔橋,天寶找了半個多月,也沒找到王員外要找的人。無奈之下,他打開信一瞧,隻見信上寫著四句話:“當年路旁一凍丐,今日竟敢戲臘梅;一孔橋邊無親人,花盡銀錢不用回”!看完信後,天寶覺得很羞愧。這時除了振作精神,並沒有其他的選擇。於是他白天幫人家幹活,晚上則挑燈夜讀。後來進京應試,沒想到一舉就中了舉人。對於王員外他一直心有愧疚,想要報恩謝罪。他到王員外家,撲通跪倒在地,手捧一封信和二十兩銀子。王員外見是天寶,趕緊接過書信和銀子。原來是三年前他寫的那封。不過,在他那四句話後麵又添了四句:"三年親戚未找成,恩人堂前還白銀;浪子回頭金不換,衣錦還鄉做賢人。" 王員外一看,驚喜交加,連忙扶起天寶,並對他讚賞有加,把臘梅許給了天寶。

這兩個浪子回頭的故事有什麼異同?最大的相同點,我想是兩個故事都強調了要認罪並願意悔改。最大的不同則一是認罪悔改的標誌。中國的浪子回頭的標誌是不僅改邪歸正了,而且還要金榜題名,富足得可以没有羞愧衣錦還鄉。而聖經中的浪子回頭標誌是改邪歸正,願意回到父那裡做一個普通的工人,只看重心的改變,並沒有外在的財富地位要求。聖經中的浪子以後會不會變得富有?我們不知道。但有兩點是肯定的,他回到父那裡時,還是窮困的並願意做父親的一個普通僱工,不是衣錦還鄉,另外,從父親對他哥哥的勸慰話中判斷,他父親也不會反悔把已經分給哥哥的財產收回在他和哥哥之間重新分配了。我們可能會問,如果改邪歸正了,但沒有富有到可以衣錦還鄉那怎麼辦呢?我們中國人常會說,無顏見江東父老,可能就選擇不回去了。

第二個最大的不同是施予寬恕者的不同。中國浪子回頭故事裡施予寬恕者是王員外,他的寬恕是有條件,為什麼浪子第一次對他女兒表示愛慕後,他是把浪子趕出了家門,而第二次是把女兒許配給他?差別是第二次時浪子已經金榜題名,富有可以給女兒穩定的物質生活了。這種想法在我們的屬世社會中很常見,也很自然。也正是因為這種有條件,浪子只有自己的財富地位有了改變,才敢回去。而聖經中浪子比喻中的施予寬恕者是父親,是有恩典慈愛的父親,他的寬恕只看重悔改的心,不看重我們在世界上的物質和地位。

講到這裡我要回到畫家對第四幅畫中的對聯的處理。如上所述,門框上的對聯是“失足不知世間X,尚肯回頭天路近”。 X是被父親頭遮擋了的一個字。按中文對聯的對仗,我們很容易去猜那個被遮擋的字應該是“遠”字,因為沒有任何其他中文字比“遠”更好地對應“近”字了。而且“失足不知世間遠”也很符合中國浪子回頭典故的教導,意思是金榜題名和富貴地位這些世人追求的目標離浪子很遠。但是,明白聖經教導的人知道“失足不知世間遠”是違背聖經教導的,因為聖經裡說:”不要愛世界和世界上的事。人若愛世界,愛父的心就不在他裡面了。因為凡世界上的事,就像肉體的情慾,眼目的情慾,並今生的驕傲,都不是從父來的,乃是從世界來的。” 實際上,我們中文的教導中有時也明白這些道理,比如我們認為富貴者中也有為富不仁的,金榜題名做官的有清官,也有貪官。因此,在聖經裡一心一意追求屬世的財富地位與花天酒地滿足情慾是一樣,都是“蠢”,因此畫家特別在被遮蓋的字傍注上了“蠢”字,標明了世人的浪子回頭與聖經中的浪子回頭的重要區別。

最後要強調的是,聖經中的這位浪子的父親是預表的我們在天上的父。他是有慈愛有恩典、賜我們平安和永生盼望的神。我們若不回到祂那裡,無論我們有多少財富有多高的地位,都沒有持久的心靈平安和喜樂。
